Call for Ideas!!

Nov 26, 2011 at 1:16 AM

Im currently writing the "next generation" of this program (long weekend) and i would like ideas about restructuring and new/different information to present.

ideas i'm batting around: having the program scan "know areas" for new files to be processed

displaing everything as a series of directory/files instead of ajust a  list from a single directory

embedding a media player, or giving the option to launch one (that way you could use this to browse yoru files and play them directly)

more manual processing options (add your own thumbs, directly edit the xml information)

better TV series infomraiton (guest stars, episode rating, etc..)

list information (type of file, languages/audio tracks, codec, width, height, 720p, 480p, 1080p, etc...)

Great program, makes it nice and easy to generate metadata for my WD TV.

One thing that I would find very useful is if the program was able to detect folder.jpg (or user specified, even) files that already exist in movie/TV series directories, and copy (not move) these to the moviename.jpg.  I've generated a whole bunch of metadata previously for HTPC, and these files in particular have DVD/Blu-ray covers in them, and would love to be able to re-use them on the WD TV without going and renaming them all myself (too many files!).

Otherwise, yeah, great app, keep it coming...

Super job on this program. It makes generating the info so easy I have been moving/updating all my TV/video to the HUB. Unfortunately, this has caused a new problem. My wife doesn't like searching for the files on the Hub. Would it be possible to add a print option that could be used to print a list of the movies in the processed area with a list of data such as ratings, run time, etc. It would be great if the list of fields to print could be user selected from a list of available fields. Also a nice but not necessary feature would be to filter the list based on matching keywords/values of certain fields. (i.e. all PG movies, genre contains DRAMA, run time less than 120 mins)

Thanks for all your hard work

I love the program couldn't do without it. How about adding the ability to create your own? Some form fields for the info and a browse window to add your own image. Good for Documentaries or music videos/dvds. Even a search google for images button

I am not quite sure if this is possible to implement as a feature, but IMDB has a nice link to allow parental feedback on movies to inform those interested in what inappropriate content is in such movies or lack thereof. Can there be a feature added to WDTVHubGen that scrapes this "Parents Guide" information and add it to either a new field or append it to the description of the film. Appending it may be more possible. I find this information invaluable in determining if a PG13 movie is suitable for my children. These days it seems MPAA is a little too lax in allowing curse words in PG13 movies and more than enough implied sex or nudity, even if suggestive. I would love to have this info in the XML and visible in the movie description or somewhere.

Here are links to some examples; is the movie Hall Pass rated (R), the MPAA Parental Guide section is down under the "Storyline" heading. is the Parental Guide for Hall Pass is the movie Dodgeball rated (PG13) is the Parental Guide for Dodgeball

Is this possible?

Another feature may be an "UNDO" button in case we accidentally select the wrong title or episode or otherwise OOPS moment, reverting back to its original name or whatever and deleting the most recent action.

I just got a WDTV SMP last week and I'm loving WDTVHubGen.

One thing I would love WDTVHubGen to incorporate is more manual processing options (add your own thumbs, directly edit the xml information).

Being able to edit info from within WDTVHubGen rather than having to manually edit the XML file in a text editor would be a huge bonus.

Thanks for all your work!

Like the app very much, more control than the scraper from WD. Would it be possible to process the .mkv and add the info on the availability of subs/language in the synopsis (along with MPAA and Rating)? I understand not everyone wantd this, but I am sure the international users would like this as a true/false option item :).

I have also some comments on the <tab> order of the manual search; when selecting this I can overtype the title (like that), need two <tabs> to get search to be selected when pressing <enter> (like that either), when the search comes back I can user the cursorkeys to select the item I want (like that), but the next <tab> does not bring me to choose (need 5 <tabs> to move to choose, maybe this can be changed?) To make sure Save This One is pressed an additional 9 <tabs> are needed, if this could be within one or two <tabs>would make full keyboard handling a lot easier to work.

Looking forward to the NG version :D!

This App is really quick and efficient, but what really would be useful is an option to enter the IMDB# while it's performing a "Process All" and comes up with the window of suggestions for the movie it can't find.

It would also be useful if it stated the name file of the movie its currently searching for in that window above the suggestions.

Good Luck with the recoding, excellent work so far and much appreciated! ;-)

Thank for this great App!!!! (sorry for my bad english!)

Works great on my new WD TV WIFI!!

Can you make more options for the Backdrops?

-(changing time and changing mode, setting for the number of Backdrops (i like only one Backdrop per movie))

-Movie quality infos (Resolution,AC3 or Stereo,Codec)

Looking forward for the next great realease of this awesome tool!!!

It would be nice to add one feature for SMP users:

SMP wants the thumbnails in the movies folder following the naming convention "*.metathumb". It would be nice if your tool would allow storing the thumbs directly with this.

Feb 29, 2012 at 4:10 PM

I have a WDTVLive SMP [Streaming Media Player], and although mine creates ".metathumb" when given the task to fetch matadata on it's own, it is also fine using the filename.jpg that this program creates. Personally, I have turned off the built-in metadata fetcher and use WDTVHubGen exclusively.

Regardless, I'm guessing it would be a minor programming adjustment to implement the option. If value=on then extension =".metadata"; else extension="jpg".

I'm ok with a little bit more hard drive space being used, and would prefer to have the graphic picture not be down-sampled. My request would be an option to NOT convert the graphic to a lower resolution picture.

Feb 29, 2012 at 11:04 PM

I definitely have to add to the requests to manually choose artwork. That would have to be the most important missing feature, as far as I'm concerned.

I have changed the Movie Title template to be ([%Year%]) [%MovieName%] so that the movies are sorted by year. What I would like to do is add the <genre> to this modified title.
This would enable me to find films by year or genre and title within media Library title sort on my wd TV box
Thank you for your great program

IMO, command line access is a must! This way we can script out processing shows/movies.

Also, being able to process and then also move files into a given structure, such as this for TV shows would be awesome:
(This goes along with the request for command line processing access)

--|-- folder.jpg (this is the general show 'folder.jpg')
--|-- Show1 - Season 1
-----|-- folder.jpg (this would be the 'folder.jpg for what season the folder is)
-----|-- show1 S01E01.mkv
--|-- folder.jpg (this is the general show 'folder.jpg')
--|-- Show2 - Season 1
-----|-- folder.jpg (this would be the 'folder.jpg for what season the folder is)
-----|-- show2 S01E01.mkv

Besides the ability to delete and change successfully the movie thumbnail (it gives the "in use" error in this version), and what most of the people here asked for (more editing, more choice), I would personally ask:
  • Information from IMDB, IF that's possible. If it isn't, could it be possible to have just the movie rating through IMDB?
  • Is it possible to show, either by an icon or anything else the following information:
    • Video quality (480p, 720p, 1080i, 1080p, etc..)
    • Languages present on the video filea and their format (i.e. English DTS 5.1, Italian Dolby TrueHD 7.1, etc...)
These two, could be an option as overlay over the movie thumbnail, if they cannot be displayed elsewhere, but that would be a last resort, as an option, if possible.
  • The background images from the movie will be downloaded automatically by the WD TV Live and placed in a folder starting with a . and the name of the movie, could those be downloaded beforehand by the program?
  • Movie related: If possible, add a "Play Trailer" option concerning movies. I remember seeing this option on my WD TV Live (latest model) when in the media library, but I couldn't find it through the generated ones.
I'd like to take the chance to thank you for this awesome program, and I just hope that moving up in the .NET libraries, it will also fix its random errors!

I hope everything's understandable! If anything else comes in my mind, I'll let you know.

What about the ability to import your own photo?
Sep 28, 2013 at 4:34 AM
How about the ability to make your own set of metadata that is manually selecting your own picture and an editor for imputing text title, description, date and such. So if you have your own home movies.

Being able to continue with automation when a Movie/TV could not be found or properly assigned, leaving all the unknown till the end.

Is there anyway to add XML text manipulation like size, font, color? I could make use of Folder Renaming as well.

Really enjoy this program btw, other programs take way too long to get things going.

How about exporting the movie sheets into a database as a movie catalog that you can browse and search movie titles.
Oct 9, 2013 at 3:56 AM
Custom renaming of movies that attaches to the movie art and xml file. For example the James Bond movies are all different names, which makes them all over the place when trying to find them with my media player. So I rename them 007 - Skyfall (2012), 007 - Casino Royal (2006) and so forth. That way they all show up together when I view them.

maybe option to download subtitle (.srt) and to rename the existing subtitles along with the movies automatically.

Hi, I love your application, its exactly what i was looking for.

The only idea I would LOVE to see is a simply "Ignore" feature which can allow us to list keywords for the program to check against the filename and skip any file that contains any of those keywords.

For Example:
Keyword: Trailer
A file titled "Trailer - moviename.mp4" would then be ignored by the application and not added to the processing list

The reason I would love to see this is because as I have an extensive collection of movies all my movies are sorted into individual folders, I also download the trailers for each movie which sits in the same folder. I don't want to have the trailers processed by the application as no data is ever found.

This should be a relativity easy feature to include and would be highly sort after by many I would imagine.

Apart from that, keep up the Great work!

I would like to see more USER OPTIONS in this program, including someone's idea of IMDB vs theMovieDB rating but I'd like to expand that to include:

1) being able to choose between IMDB, theMovieDB, and ROTTEN TOMATO (User) ratings,

2) choice between MPAA vs Europe AGE ratings,

3) being able to choose SIZE of THUMBNAIL, and SOURCE of Thumbnail.
I like larger resolution images because they look sharper on Big Screen.
4) Being able to SAVE user Preferences... I seem to recall this ability was in earlier versions.... don't know why it was lost.

5) allow for PREVIEW of Changes to be made, available to User as an OPTION - this is especially important in light of my next point:

6) SPEED of processing - It seems to be a bit laggy... even on a 15Gb cable connection. - This may be due to processing before allowing user to see finished result.

At first, thank you for this program. I think w can say it saves us all hours and hours.

But u asked for any ideas. and I have one.

For movies it's ok allready, but when u do a serie with multiple seasons they get the information from tvdb, when getting the folder.jpg and the episode pictures it uses the first available banner on that page from that series / season.

I realy would like to add a funtion where i can say this is the picture for this series and then let is do it's thing for the whole season.
Then ask again for a picture of season 2, doing it's thing and so on.

Hope that will be possible.

It would be nice, if can schedule in some way the update mijn move/serrie directory.

That would be nice becouse in my case i download some legal movies :-p on my my nas, and i want the metadata to add/updated/corrected after the download.
There for it would ben nice if can start process from a command line.

Firstly, thank you so much for this program. Probably saved months of manual downloading and sorting.

I'm still using an excel spreadsheet for listing my movies.

My wish would be a way to save or export the list of generated movies so that if someone asks me which movies I have, I can send over (or bring over) the list which would include the cover art, title, year, plot, cast.....basically the detail panel. I know nothing about programming. Don't know the best format to save in. Possibly html?

Anyways, thanks again for a great program, and good luck doing the rewrite.

I hope I'm not too late to propose an idea. I love the program, perfect for sorting TV and Movies.
I'd love to see the same thing for Music Videos, I have a collection in a "Jukebox" folder that I'd like to be displayed in the same way as the movies.

Have option to append new background urls to xlm file when it find them. Also, my movies are named the way I want them to display on my wdtv. I like to have BRRip on the title or dvdrip etc.

This is my main program I use for all the wdtv stuff. It works great.

Sometimes it doesnt pull in the imdb information when I put in the number. Example. Below the Sea (1933). It gives me no results found when I do a manual search with tt0023793

I like your App really much. I have two suggested improvements or ideas.
  1. It would be so nice if you can choose whether the program will use the filename or the folder name, because often I use shortened movie names and full length folder names.
  2. Would it be possible that you can choose whether you use the original name or named after the Movie Name and make it possible to switch this after the processing. The reason is because I store my movie files on a small home server. I can't change the filenames for 3 days. So my WD TV Live sort the movies in the library after the filename not the name in die .XML-file. After this three days I want to change the movie filename from the original filename to the Filename in the .XML-file.

Hi can you add the option to keep the original file name?

That option is already there. Go into options and change "Use Original Filenames" to True.
